With high-energy rhythms, aggressive guitar riffs, groovy and absolutely banging and melodic vocals, New Monarch is a band that is hell-bent on redefining indie rock. Blending experimental rock soundscapes and influences from Hip-Hop to Metal, the band creates an atmosphere that can hardly be ignored! In an exclusive interview with The Skadoosh, New Monarch shared their journey with us.
How did the advent of Covid 19 affect the coming together of the band?
The COVID-19 pandemic undeniably caused a slowdown across the globe, which, in turn, made the establishment of a new band seem less daunting. With ample time at our disposal, the circumstances were conducive to creativity. The most notable impact of COVID-19 on New Monarch was the necessity of remote collaboration. Each member resided in a different state, prompting us to convert small areas of our homes into improvised recording studios. We became adept at using the same software for learning and practice, which significantly enhanced our efficiency. Through email, we were able to write, record, and collaborate on each other's music. While we would have preferred to be in the same physical space, the skills we acquired as DIY recording engineers were instrumental in enabling us to produce this record.
What’s the story behind the name ‘New Monarch’?
New Monarch was sort of a play on rebirth. A new rule, a fresh start for all of us. We had all come from various bands and projects. So, we wanted to build upon what we had already learned & experienced. Most importantly we wanted to learn from the mistakes we had made.
What does the music composition process look like and how is the unique sound achieved?
Each band member contributes as a songwriter, ensuring that every song originates from an idea proposed by one of us. Some concepts were in their early stages, while others were more fully developed. We would select these ideas and expand upon them. Our approach is guided by a philosophy that consistently proves effective, allowing us to navigate challenges without letting ego interfere. The best idea always wins!
What do the live performances of New Monarch look like?
New Monarch is definitely high energy! We try to give everything we have when we hit the stage. Most of our career together has been working behind a screen & from a distance. The shows serve as a great release. Shows are the fun part!
What are the band’s major influences in music or other art forms?
Our influences range from hip-hop to metal. I would say rock music is the common denominator for all of us. Although everybody has varying influences, we were brought together by bands like Queen, Alice In Chains, Muse, Tool & System Of A Dow, to name a few.
What would you say about the condition of Rock/Indie Rock music currently?
There are a lot of great bands in the world right now, but You can’t be just a great band with great music anymore. You have to be a social media influencer, mixing engineer, video, editor, etc. That’s not just the state of rock, that seems to be the state of all things entertainment.
What activities does the band do to unwind and does it help the music process?
We are all active gym-goers. Throughout the duration of our last tour, we made sure to do our overnight stays at or near Planet Fitness (a great tip for touring bands). James Lascu (bass) is a very good artist. Matt (drums)is into photography. Sebastian (vocals) and Ryan (guitar) both train in MMA and Jiu Jitsu.
Are there any upcoming projects or collaborations that you’d like to tell us about?
We are currently thrilled to announce the release of our full-length album, which is self-titled and features ten tracks that we are very proud of!
What does the band prefer: EPs, Albums or Singles?
I think we all love albums. We have often romanticised the days when it was commonplace to buy an album, read the lyrics, examine the artwork, etc. Throughout my extensive music career, whether with Red Sun Rising or New Monarch, I have consistently felt as though I belong to a different generation (Ryan Williams). So definitely albums!
What take does the band have on collaborations and how does it impact your music?
We are all for collaborations. We have all done various collaborations when it comes to songwriting and production. As far as a collaboration between New Monarch and another artist? We would be receptive to the idea if the artist aligns well with our vision. It could be an exciting opportunity to blend different genres.
What piece of advice do you think upcoming musicians need right now?
Do it for the love! The fame & fortune may or may not come.
